Activation guide: password license

1         Background

Between 2022 and 2026 we underwent a process to migrate our business systems. With this migration we could unfortunately not continue supporting our licensing v5, which is being used in your software. As a solution, we provided a 10-year password to all customers still using licensing v5 in their software.

Because of the migration, the only other solution is with a) a new CCK and b) a floating license. The way to keep your license working is through a Floating License Server (FLS) of licensing v6, which can connect with your local licensing v5 component.

To activate this license, you will need to install a Floating License Server (FLS), activate the license on there and then connect your Magics to the FLS.

To keep it simple, we recommend you install the FLS on the same computer as your Magics, unless you have an IT team that can aid you in setting up the FLS on a server. The instructions moving forward will assume a local installation on the same computer.

2         How to install a Floating License Server (FLS)

For the first step of the process, we’ll need to download and install the Floating License Server.

1.    To download the software, please go to our passwords website and log in with your (new) CCK.

2.    On the Downloads page, select Floating License Server 6.9.2 from the dropdown list and click Download. It is crucial that you use that version. The Floating License Server 7.x will not work with your software.

3.    Install the Floating License Server. As mentioned before, we recommend you install it on the same computer as your Magics. The following settings can be modified here: Installed components

The Floating License Server allows you to install the following components:

·         License Server – the license server itself

·         License Administrator – a UI tool that allows performing different operations with the license server, like adding or deleting license modules or viewing the list of the installed licenses and their usage. This component can also be installed on a different machine than the license server itself.

4.    When you come to the IP port number, we recommend using the default value here: 7000.

5.    In case you installed this on a server, you will need to either have the server name available, or set up a static IP address on the server. Please align with your IT on this if needed. This is not something we can aid you in.

3         How to activate the Floating License Server (FLS)

1.    Search for the License Administrator program on your computer and open it

2.    Connect to the Floating License Server (FLS)

·         Select the Floating License Server in the list of the servers.

3.    Installing the licenses (registering key files on the Floating License Server)

a)    If you have an internet connection, this is easy. Go to the menu bar, choose Licenses → Auto Update License.

Enter the CCKey of the floating license that you received via e-mail and click Start.

b)    If you don’t have internet access, you will need to go to the passwords website, log in with your CCK and go to the activation tab:

Copy your System ID, fill in your e-mail address and Activate. This will send a keyfile to your e-mail address as well as make it available for download from this page.

Save the Key file (*.matkey) you received in a local folder on your computer or on an external storage device.

From the menu bar in License Administrator, choose Licenses → Add.

Browse for the key file that you saved locally on your computer or externally, then click OK.

3.1.   Connect your software to the Floating License Server (FLS)

Now that your FLS is up and running and has an active license, you’re going to go to your Magics. Either the license wizard automatically opens up, or you’ll open it from the Help menu.

1.    Click on Specify next to Floating License Server

2.    Select Add.

3.    Enter “localhost” as IP Address and 7000 as IP Port and click OK. In case you changed the IP Port to something else, use that value. In case you installed the FLS on a server, please use the Windows Device Name or static IP address.

4.    One you press OK, you go back to the Remote License Servers window, where you will find your newly entered floating license server connection. You can now press Close and you will be able to use your Magics, as long as the license is active on your FLS.
