Magics is not considering the concept of sRGB

Magics is not considering the concept of sRGB and assuming all color info to be linear RGB.

This article applies to all Magics versions.

Issue

  • Magics is unable to display the full color depth as intended with sRGB.  Color information will look a bit more 'faded', less rich in color
  • When importing a file with sRGB colors, Magics will display these RGB values as if they were linear RGB values
  • Magics does not convert from linear to sRGB, nor from sRGB to linear.  Thus when importing a file with linear RGB and exporting to a file with sRGB, the export will contain the wrong RGB values (and vice versa, from sRGB to linear RGB).
  • in Magics it is possible to color parts and vertices, which is done in linear RGB.  So when importing a file with sRGB colors, adding colors in Magics will result in having a part with partially sRGB and partially linear RGB colors.

Root Cause

Magics is not considering the concept of sRGB and assuming all color info to be linear RGB.  

Workaround

As a work-around, to avoid the lack of conversion, it is advised to import and export colored parts using the same data format.  As Magics is not changing the RGB values, this ensures no loss of data.  In case of sRGB data format, it does mean that the rendering in Magics will not be 100% accurate (color information will look a bit more 'faded', less rich in color)
