Install the Floating License Server

Install a new Floating License Server and the License Server Manager used to activate and manage its licenses.

Before you begin, you need:

  • Administrator rights on the machine you're installing to.
  • Hardware: 500 MB free disk space, 4 GB RAM, 2 GHz dual-core CPU or better.
  • Operating system: Windows 10, Windows 11, or Windows Server 2016/2019/2022/2025.

Already have a Floating License Server installed? If you're reinstalling or replacing the server and the existing installation prevents setup, see Clean up the Floating License Server.

Installing on a virtual machine? The Server ID is derived from the machine's MAC address. Make sure it doesn't change after activation, as a changed Server ID may invalidate the activated licenses.

Step 1: Download the installation package

This is the Floating License Server package — a separate download from the Materialise software product, from the same download page.

  1. Go to the Online Software Download page and log in with your Entitlement ID or Activation ID.
  2. Download the latest Floating License Server package.
  3. Extract the .zip file to a folder on the computer.

Step 2: Install the License Server

  1. Open the ID-based FLS installation package (V2026.06)folder in the extracted package.
  2. Double-click FlexnetLicenseServerWizardInstaller.exe and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. When prompted, review the settings below. Most customers can keep the defaults; only change the port or HTTPS settings if your IT environment requires it.
  4. When the installer shows Install Complete, click Done.
Field Description Default
Service Name Name shown for the License Server service in Windows. FlexNet Embedded Local License Server

HTTPS Certificate Path Path to a .pfx or .p12 certificate when using HTTPS. C:\ProgramData\flexnetls\fnedemo

The License Server is installed as a Windows service and starts automatically.

Step 3: Install the License Server Manager

The FlexNet License Server Manager is the standard interface for activating, reviewing, and managing licenses.

  1. Return to the extracted package and find FlexNetLicenseServerManagerInstaller.exe.
  2. Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Afterward, search for FlexNet License Server Manager in the Windows search bar and open it.

Step 4: Verify the installation

  1. Confirm that FlexNet License Server Manager connects to the License Server and displays the server details.
